TOTAL VOCAL at JAMMIN JAVA

Come to Jammin Java (Vienna, VA) this Thursday, January 14 for TOTAL VOCAL featuring Pitches Be Crazy, Word Of Mouth, and Handsome Reward. The Pitches are turning this fun-filled show into a benefit concert to help support the Jackson/Kinney families.

Pitches Be Crazy is an all vocal cover band rockin’ some of the biggest hits of the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Edgy and raw in their arrangements and presentation, they add those juicy harmonies, bone rattling percussion, and subharmonic bass, making PBC very unique across the a cappella landscape.

Word of Mouth, a post-collegiate group, were the winners of DC’s first “Aca-Challenge” a cappella competition, They are a mixed all-vocal band with a serious passion for contemporary a cappella and a Peter Pan complex.

Handsome Reward is a four man barbershop group who are a spin-off of the large chorus out of Gaithersburg, MD known as Harmony Express.  They also have members who are part of the famed Alexandria Harmonizers.

Handsome Reward Barbershop Quartet

Greg Kenney is an 18 year old young man who was once very active in the local community theater scene as an actor, singer, and dancer. He has a list of credits that rival many adults. An active member of his church and community, Greg has dedicated countless hours to his faith and has even spent time on a personal mission to support the church.

An avid runner, Greg (or GJ as he is also known by), was running the Rock N Roll Marathon in Virginia Beach, VA in September. Close to the finish line, he collapsed with cardiac arrest. Fortunately, another runner behind him was a nurse and provided aid immediately.

With college and a bright future ahead of him since he finished high school, he is now in intensive therapy to regain basic motor skills and learn to communicate again. He is battling to learn how to even stand on his own. Everyone who knows him knows he will hustle every day to beat the odds and get back to being in the hustle of life. His family has set up a gofundme link to provide updates and assist with medical bills.  https://www.facebook.com/actorinprogress/?fref=ts

Half of the profits from this benefit will go to Greg’s medical fund.

Jivon Jackson was named as one of the Top 40 Under 40 for supporting the development of their communities. He is well known throughout the DC, MD, and VA performance arts communities.  A producer, director, writer, actor, singer, dancer, and mentor for youth, Jivon has been a force in the Southern Maryland and DC areas and has screen credits as an actor on cable television.  Last year, Jivon was in accident where he sustained severe head and brain injuries.

Half of the profits from our benefit will go towards an arts program that he chooses that will help to continue to promote performing arts in the community.

These are great causes for AcaFans to support, so please check them each out, and give if you feel so led.

Meet the Folks from ACAPPELLA the Musical!

Hey AcaFans! We hope you are filling your summers with lots of fabulous a cappella!

Today, we are bringing you an interview about an a cappella opportunity you need to get onto your schedule this week: ACAPPELLA the Musical at the New York Musical Theatre Festival!

acathemusical

What is ACAPPELLA the Musical, and who is making it happen?

ACAPPELLA is a groundbreaking piece of theater melding two exciting art forms together. Musical theatre meets a cappella in this romantic musical comedy for all ages. The project was conceived and is being produced by Greg Cooper. Award-winning Atlanta playwright Vynnie Meli has woven an engaging story around the soul-stirring music of The Acappella Company. [More about the Creative Team here! We see you, Evan Feist. -AFB]

A gospel singer leaves home, going from the “music of praise” to the “music that pays.” A jaded roadie rushes him away from an arena full of screaming fans while a forgotten and ignored old man on a street corner belts some beautiful blues just because it feeds his soul. Jeremiah realizes that somewhere along the way, it became more about the money than the music. He goes back – to family, to friends, to the woman he left behind, but can he? Is it love or just nostalgia? He returns to the place where everything is familiar, except that nothing is. He learns that he has to find his own way home.

Introduce us to the cast! What previous a cappella (contemporary or otherwise) experience do they have, or what groups have they been a part of?

Our cast is made up of both Broadway veterans and several vocal band members with a ton of a cappella experience. Featured in the company are Virginia Woodruff (Violet, Leap of Faith, The Color Purple, All Shook Up, Smokey Joe’s Café), Cheryl A. Freeman (The Who’s Tommy , Disney’s Hercules), Tyler Hardwick, Anthony Chatmon II, Miche Braden and Darilyn Castillo have joined the cast of ACAPPELLA. Rounding out the company are Katrina R. Dideriksen, Gavyn Pickens, Emily Goglia (SoCal Vocals, Element), Rachel Gavaletz, Janelle McDermoth (UPenn Off The Beat, RANGE), Darryl Williams, Alex Koceja and Garrett Turner. [More about the Cast here! -AFB]

Tell us about the Acappella Company and how they got involved with your project.

Every vision has a genesis. And the vision for ACAPPELLA The Musical launched with some of the most soul-stirring music ever created! All of the songs featured in the production were originally produced by The Acappella Company – more commonly known as Acappella. Acappella has sold well over three million units and toured every continent on the globe since Keith Lancaster – songwriter, producer, and original lead singer – formed the group in 1982.

Believing in the awesome versatility and flexibility of the human voice, this renowned vocal group can fill a large concert hall with beautiful, intricate music without ever plucking a string or beating a drum. Acappella’s current model, launched in August 2014, combines the talents of the ministry’s past and present singers on concerts and albums. The group’s lineup will vary from event to event, showcasing vocalists from multiple eras of Acappella Ministries’ 32-year history in fresh new combinations. Acappella has featured special lineups for reunion concerts and other select events in the past, but is now in position to make that a permanent fixture for fans to enjoy.

Melissa Lancaster, Keith’s daughter, is currently Vice President of the group and oversees much of the current line production. She can hardly contain her passion for music. “I’m sort of a workaholic – mainly because I love what I do! I grew up on a bus touring with my family for my dad’s singing group. I saw the whole country at an early age, and now I can’t stay put. It made me a gypsy so I have to travel and sing or I get antsy!”

Melissa has served as a both an invaluable resource and a constant source of inspiration for the show!

What style(s) of a cappella music will acafans be treated to? How did you select the songs?

We’ve got something for everyone! Gospel, jazz, blues, R&B, soul, hip-hop – you name it! The Acappella Company has recorded 24 albums in their long history, so it was like diving into a treasure chest! We tried to select songs that would be effective in the telling of this timeless story.

Where can acafans see ACAPPELLA the Musical?

New York City! Performances run Tuesday, July 7 at 7:00 pm, Friday, July 10 at 5:00 pm, Saturday, July 11 at 9:00 pm, Sunday, July 12 at 12:00 pm, Tuesday, July 14 at 1:00 pm at the PTC Performance Space – located at 555 West 42nd Street (between 10th and 11th Avenues on the South Side of 42nd Street).

Is there an opportunity to meet you and the cast after the show, and maybe get some autographs?

Sure, if you can catch us! We’re usually hanging around in the lobby after each show. Come and say “Hi!”

The show starts  TONIGHT, July 7, and runs through the July 14. How do acafans buy their tickets?

Introducing “The Sing-Off” Season 5 Competitors

Despite being pretty disappointed that Season 5 of The Sing-Off is a single, 2-hour special, we are super excited for the groups that made it in!

For those of you who don’t know, The Sing-Off is a reality show competition for a cappella singing groups. Probably its most famous winners to-date are Pentatonix from Season 3 in 2011, but last year’s Season 4 winners Home Free seem to be holding their own with their a cappella and country fans. Whatever gets a cappella out to the masses, it’s all good to us.

With the format change comes a change in the judging line-up (Twitter links included).  Shawn Stockman and Jewel return, but our favorite, nerdtastic  Ben Folds, will be replaced with Fall Out Boy frontman Patrick Stump.

As always, we are happy to share our compilation of group information and contacts so you can get to know the groups in advance.

The Sing-Off Season 5 Competitors

If you don’t want to individually follow all the Twitter accounts, you can just subscribe to our AcaSingOff Season 5 Twitter list that does it for you.

Please keep in mind that errors in this post are entirely our own doing, and we are more than happy to make corrections, changes, or additions if you notify us!

And with that, here we go (in alphabetical order)….

1.  A-SQUARED
A cappella + electronic music? We’re totally in! This will be new for strictly Sing-Off fans, so keep an open mind for looping and effects, still all made with only the human voice.

Members: Nimal Eames-Scott, Paul Homes (Bass), Jacob Reske, DJ Stanfill, Jackson Thea

Watch them do their stuff live here:

2. THE EXCHANGE
Seems like there is always one group on The Sing-Off with alums from a previous season, and this one is it.  You’ll recognize Jamal and Aaron from the University of Rochester Yellowjackets (Season 3) and Richard from Urban Method (Season 3), plus Chris worked as a TSO vocal producer, and Fredo recorded studio tracks for TSO theme music.

Members: Alfredo AustinChristopher Diaz (Bass), Jamal Moore, Aaron Sperber, Richard Steighner (VP)

The Exchange have a couple of albums, bunches of  videos, and they tour extensively, often overseas, with a very loyal following. Here is the video for their original song “Kerosene,” which really shows off their individual personalities.

3. MELODORES (Vanderbilt University)
All-male, collegiate a cappella – it wasn’t a matter of if, but who. And this year we’re not disappointed because we already stalk follow the Melodores.

Members:  Jonathan Amaro-Barron, Hollis Cuffie, Cameron David, Austin Lyons, Jamal Marcelin, James McHugh, Dan McNeil, Ted Moock, Augie Phillips, Nikhil Ramaprasad, Justin Riele, William Woodard

And there you have it. This season’s six competing groups.

Now that you’ve met the players, who will YOU be cheering for this season? Let us know in the comments or via Twitter or our Facebook page.

Remember, the hashtag is #SingOff with no “the” in front. Get it trending when The Sing-Off: Season 5 airs on Wednesday, December 17 on NBC.

The #SingOff’s VoicePlay: 5 Guys & 1 Lucky Lady

By VoicePlay™

Our big journey onto the small screen started innocently, and as all journeys do: with the Taylor Swift tune “Trouble.”

No doubt many of you have already seen the video on YouTube or listened to the track on iTunes.  It is indeed a different take on the song, and with the incomparable Rachel Potter on the lead lyric, and we created some momentary musical magic.  Magic enough to catch a road weary Sing-Off Producer’s eye and magic enough to land us a coveted invitation to do a video audition for the 7-episode NBC special, The Sing-Off.

Well, that was all fabulous and amazing and exciting, but herein lies the rub: the fine and wise folks at NBC wanted VoicePlay to be featured on the show as a 6 voice group.

I’ll say it again while you wrap your head around that one. 6 voices: 5 guys, 1 lucky lady.

“Hmmmm…” you say.  “Who was this lucky lady that the producers had their eye on?” And to that I say, “Quit interrupting with your silly questions, I’m getting to it shortly.”

Well, naturally it was Rachel, the darling songstress of Broadway and the apple of many an eye.  So, with a dream in our hearts and a Twinkie in our pockets, we inquired as to where Miss Potter’s affections lay.  Alas, our feelings of warm vocal yumminess were not returned, for her heart belonged to another reality show on a competing network, the X-Factor.  So it was written in the stars that our paths shall not be entwined in a cappella glory, and she strutted off to get a bazillion views on YouTube and thousands of Twitter followers, yada, yada, yada, happily ever after.

“So,” you ask, “What happened to our heroes VoicePlay?” And once again I’ll ask you to let me do the talking and kindly zip the lip!

Ahem.  Back to the story at hand:  VoicePlay, not to be deterred from their visions of Pentatonix-like aca-geek fame and low rating network television wealth, forged ahead into the crucible of reality TV with a new front lady, a valuable friend with a voice like a caged animal — and hair to match — Miss Honey Larochelle.

The audition was filmed.  The link was sent.  The call came in.  The non-disclosures were signed.  The deal was done.  6 weeks later we were in LA… and THAT is where the story REALLY gets good…
